Chu says central Taiwan is key to winning the election
Chu campaigns in New Taipei

With less than a week remaining before this Saturday’s nationwide elections, ruling party presidential candidate Eric Chu has turned his attention to the central city of Taichung.

Chu paraded through the city in a motorcade on Monday morning, joined by several local legislative candidates from his party.

Chu says that central Taiwan will be key for his party – the Kuomintang (KMT) – to win this weekend.

“Taichung is very important, so today is not the only day that we’ll be here," said Chu.

"We will make a special trip back to Taichung on the night before the elections, and stage an event here to drum up support," he said. "Of course, we definitely say that central Taiwan is the key to winning. And of course, we are resolute in our determination to beat the DPP.”

Despite the rain, some citizens were out along the route to show their support.

Later in the afternoon, Chu traveled to several hotly contested districts in New Taipei City: Tamsui, Sanchung, and Luchou. Although some people along the route flashed him the “thumb’s down” sign, many others turned out to show their support.

With many local ruling party candidates in a tight battle with opponents from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Chu urged people to vote for serious KMT candidates.
