Tsai courts Hakka vote in Miaoli
Tsai Ing-wen in Miaoli

DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen has spent Wednesday in Miaoli County drumming up support as part of a final week of campaigning.

Miaoli County is often seen as a stronghold of the ruling KMT, Tsai’s chief rival party in the election. Miaoli is also home to one of the highest concentrations of Hakka people in Taiwan. The Hakka are an ethnic Chinese group with a distinctive culture and language.

Tsai herself has Hakka ancestry, and at a press conference Wednesday, she promised to bring about a revival of the Hakka culture and language if elected.

After finishing up her rally in Miaoli, Tsai went on to neighboring Hsinchu and Taoyuan, other areas with strong Hakka constituencies. While in Taoyuan, Tsai responded to criticism of her cross-strait policy, saying that the DPP also seeks to maintain cross-strait peace and to normalize cross-strait economic interaction.
