The leadership of the ruling KMT has called for voters to back the party’s legislative candidates at an election rally. The rally, held Thursday, comes just two days before Taiwan’s general elections.
President Ma Ying-jeou and KMT presidential candidate Eric Chu were both in attendance. Former KMT chairmen Wu Po-hsiung and Lien Chan and Legislature President Wang Jin-pyng were also present.
Wang said that the KMT’s chief rivals, the DPP, will allow imports of US pork if they are elected to office. The banned leanness enhancing drug ractopamine is found in US pork, and the question of whether to lift bans on its import has proven controversial.
President Ma Ying-jeou said that his predecessor, Chen Shui-bian, had failed to uphold most of his campaign promises. Chen, a member of the DPP, is Taiwan’s only non-KMT president to date. Ma said that only the KMT can ensure a stable, peaceful future for Taiwan.
Meanwhile, former KMT chairman Wu Po-hsiung said that voters should consider their children and grandchildren when casting their ballots. He said that voters should support the KMT to avoid a repeat of what he called the chaos of the previous DPP administration.
