Ma calls for party unity on final day before elections

President Ma Ying-jeou is calling for unity within his party, the ruling KMT. Ma issued his call in a video posted to his Facebook page Friday.

Ma called on supporters to unite behind KMT presidential candidate Eric Chu and ensure he is elected on Saturday. Ma said that while the KMT is in the middle of a difficult period, supporters should focus on Taiwan’s future.

Ma said he will shoulder responsibility for the way he pushed policies forward, adding that Eric Chu will do a better job if elected.

“I believe that if the KMT’s presidential candidate, Eric Chu gets elected tomorrow, he will continue with correct policy directions on the basis of existing policies," said Ma.

"He will learn lessons from the areas in which I didn’t do well enough, and will do an even better job, bringing a better future for Taiwan and for the next generation.”

Meanwhile, Eric Chu said Friday that the United States and China both call for regional peace and stability. Chu said the public can rest assured that he will deliver both if elected.

He said he has confidence in Taiwan’s democracy and social order.
