Candidates drum up support on final day of presidential race

Taiwan’s three presidential candidates are scrambling to attract voters’ support on the final day before they go to the polls.

The three presidential candidates are Eric Chu of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and James Soong of the People First Party (PFP).

The KMT is holding two campaign rallies, one in the central city of Taichung and other in New Taipei City. President Ma Ying-jeou, the KMT’s former Chairman, will attend both events to drum up support for Eric Chu.

Meanwhile, the opposition DPP is also holding two rallies Friday night with one to take place in front of the presidential office. A DPP spokesman said Friday that the party is optimistic about the election, and that the party is ready to rule Taiwan again. The DPP was in power for eight years from 2000 to 2008.

PFP presidential candidate James Soong is attending a rally in Taipei. Soong said this year’s election has three issues at its core: maintaining the cross-strait status quo, Taiwan’s economic woes, and deepening Taiwan’s democracy.
