Taiwan’s foreign ministry is thanking the United States, European Union and Japan for sending their congratulatory messages to President-elect Tsai Ing-wen. The ministry said that it has been receiving messages from many officials in many countries after the elction.
The US State Department sent a message to congratulate Tsai on her victory and Taiwan on another peaceful transfer of political power. The US said that the people of the US and Taiwan share the benefits of the peaceful development of cross-strait ties and US-Taiwan relations.
Japan’s Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said that Taiwan’s smooth elections show the deepening of Taiwan’s democracy. He said Taiwan and Japan share the same basic values and there are close exchanges between the two countries’ economies and people. He looks forward to strengthening cooperation and exchanges.
The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Frederica Mogherini said Taiwan’s respect for democracy, rule of law and human rights has enabled it to successfully hold its election. The EU supports the peaceful development of cross-strait ties.
