China’s Taiwan Affairs Office says it will continue to use the 1992 Consensus and oppose any Taiwan independence activities in cross-strait relations. The 92 Consensus refers to Taiwan and China agreeing on one China, but each side with its own interpretation. It made the remarks on Saturday after Taiwan elected Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as president.
The Taiwan Affairs Office also said that Beijing’s policy towards Taiwan will not be affected by the results of the election.
Regarding China’s remarks, Chinese Culture University Professor George Tsai said China would use a high standard to monitor Tsai’s cross-strait policy. He said though Beijing may not make any extreme moves, if cross-strait relations are not handled well, the progress made between Taiwan and China could come to a standstill.
Tamkang University Professor Edward Chen says that China’s policy is clear. If Tsai does not accept the 92 Consensus, she will have to come up with another new agreement that includes one China, but that would be difficult for Tsai.
