Premier Mao Chi-kuo has tendered his resignation and taken a leave of absence. Cabinet Spokesman Sun Lih-chyun said on Monday that Vice Premier Chang San-cheng will fill in as acting premier.
The Cabinet called an extraordinary session on Monday afternoon. During the meeting, the premier announced that he and the Cabinet would resign en masse. That’s pending approval from President Ma Ying-jeou.
Sun says the premier is determined to follow through with the plan for en masse resignation.
“The Premier’s decision to step down and to lead the Cabinet in resigning en masse remains unchanged. The Premier called on the public to respect the opinions [expressed in the election]. Setting a constitutional precedent by having the majority party [in the legislature] form the Cabinet, and practicing responsible politics, are good for the country and for the people," said Mao.
Meanwhile, acting Premier Chang San-cheng said the Cabinet will not make any major decisions during the transition period.
