Temperatures across Taiwan are set to fall below 10C over the weekend.
As the thermometer begins to drop, temperatures in Taipei could fall to 5C, setting a 30 year record. Further south, temperatures could still fall to as low as 7C. In some flat, coastal areas, the apparent temperature may reach 1C.
The cold snap is expected to begin Friday night and last until Tuesday. With high levels of moisture in the air, mountains above 3000m may see snowfall starting on Friday. Lower mountains around 1000m or higher including Taipei’s Yangmingshan may see snow or sleet over the weekend.
The cold front is expected to be the strongest to hit Taiwan in ten years. Still, it is unlikely to break all time record lows, such as the 0.2C recorded in Taipei in 1902.
