Tsai Ing-wen vows to promote unity

President-elect Tsai Ing-wen says she will work hard to push for reform, unity and justice in Taiwan. She was speaking Friday upon receiving the official certificate of election from the Central Election Committee.

Tsai said she will work hard to earn the trust of Taiwan’s people and will not abuse the power that she is given.

“This is not just a certificate of election, it is also an employment letter issued by the people," said Tsai.

"I will cherish the letter and constantly remind myself of my responsibilities. As the president of a democratic country, I fully understand that power is not my inherent right. It is given to me by the people. If I don't do my job well, people will take his power back when time is up."

Tsai’s victory also marks the third time in Taiwan’s history that the party in power has changed. Tsai said this change shows that Taiwan’s democracy has evolved, though it still has room to deepen its roots.

Tsai also calls for parties involved in the election to put aside their differences and resume their political duties.
