Record cold weather to last until Tuesday

Taiwan is continuing to deal with extremely cold weather. Taipei, in the north, saw the mercury dip to four degrees Celsius on Sunday, the coldest weather in 44 years. A meteorological station in the capital city also recorded sleet for the first time in its 120 year history.

The cold weather continued into Monday, with Taipei’s northern seaside district of Tamsui recording the coldest sea level temperature of 4.3 C. The northern half of the island saw lows of 4-5 C, while southern Taiwan was not much warmer, with lows of around 6-7 C.

Forecasters say that the cloud cover is likely to dissipate on Monday, with sun bringing some relief from the chilly weather. But they say that temperatures in the north are likely to remain below 10 C.

Meteorologist Hsu Chung-yi said Monday that it will feel even colder than that.

“The apparent temperature today in Taipei will be between zero and 7 Celsius. In Keelung, it will be negative 2 C, and in Miaoli and Matsu it will be negative 4 C, the coldest in Taiwan. The cold front will lose its intensity during the day on Tuesday, but it will still be very cold at dawn tomorrow, with temperatures of between 7-9 C in western Taiwan and in Ilan, and about 12-13 C along the east coast. The weather will warm up later in the day," said Hsu.
