The details of the guidelines to teaching high school social studies will be discussed after May, which is after the new administration is in office.

There was a big controversy and student protests over a plan to change social studies textbooks and teaching guidelines in the high school curriculum. The new guidelines were scheduled to go into effect in 2018, but Education minister Wu Se-hwa said that date has been put aside for now.

Wu said the new guidelines for the 12-year education program are aimed at decreasing mandatory classes and increasing electives. He said local governments need to discuss how this would affect teaching assignments and textbooks. Wu said he would listen to education officials’ thoughts on the controversies regarding the new teaching guidelines.
