Looking forward to legislative reforms: Tsai

President-elect Tsai Ing-wen says she is looking forward to legislative reforms. The chairwoman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was speaking Tuesday in Taipei at a DPP event.

Under her leadership, the DPP won the majority for the first time in history in the legislative elections on January 16th.

Tsai urged all newly-elected DPP legislators to do their jobs well to meet public expectations. This includes the quality and efficiency of legislation and the review of draft bills and government budgets. Tsai said public participation is also a priority.

“We must make every effort to ensure that the public will be able to fully participate in the process of [legislation]. Though more time is needed during the process, public participation is society’s expectation. I hope that you all spend more time reviewing draft bills, especially in the areas where there is no spotlight as that’s where our professionalism and involvement are most needed.”

The new session of the legislature will open on February 1. As to who will be the president and vice president of the legislature, Tsai said she will respect the decision made by the DPP.
