President Ma Ying-jeou says that all three candidates running in the recent presidential election agreed on the need to maintain the cross-strait status quo. He says that this cross-party agreement on cross-strait issues is an acknowledgement of his presidency’s accomplishments.
Ma was speaking on Friday to a visiting group of ethnic Chinese from Thailand.
Ma said that the 1992 Consensus is one key to the government’s ability to maintain the cross-strait status quo. Under the consensus, both Taiwan and Mainland China agree that both sides belong to one China. However, each side is allowed to maintain its own interpretation of what one China means.
Ma said that by cultivating mutual trust, the two sides were able to arrange his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping last year. He said he hopes that the incoming government set to take office on May 20 will treat cross-strait issues carefully and maintain cross-strait peace.
