The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has endorsed political heavyweight Su Chia-chyuan to be legislature president. The DPP received a majority in the legislature in the recent general election.
Two other DPP contenders decided to bow out of the race, including veteran politician Ker Chien-ming. Ker has been the DPP's legislative caucus whip for years.
Su said he hopes the legislature as a whole will approve his nomination when it meets to discuss the issue on Monday.
“Basically, all members of the [DPP] legislative caucus thanked the other two candidates. We are now working to get the [post] on February 1st," said Su.
Because the DPP holds a majority in the legislature, it is expected that Su and the DPP choice for legislature vice president will be approved.
The ruling KMT suffered a humiliating defeat in the legislative elections on January 16th and will become the second-largest political party in Taiwan.
