President Ma Ying-jeou says finding the most suitable energy mix is the best energy policy for Taiwan. Ma was speaking Saturday while visiting a wind farm operator in central Taiwan's Nantou County.
Ma said that both solar power and wind power have limitations and are unable to generate electricity 24 hours a day. He said that these limitations mean there is no way Taiwan can reject other energy sources, such as nuclear power and coal power.
Ma said the best policy is to find the “most suitable energy mix.” He said given that nuclear power and coal power account for 95% of power generated in Taiwan, replacing them completely with renewable substitutes would be difficult.
Ma said there are three prerequisites for building a low-carbon, nuclear safe Taiwan; no electricity rationing, reasonable electricity prices, and ensuring Taiwan's ability to keep its pledge of cutting CO2 emissions.
