Chinese tourist applications down 15% year-on-year

The National Immigration Agency (NIA) says that there were 15% fewer applications from Chinese tourists to come to Taiwan last month than there were the previous January.

The NIA says it received over 396,000 applications from Chinese visitors for entry in January. That’s a decrease of about 70,000 applications year-on-year.

However, the actual number of Chinese visitors reached 299,000 this January, up 13% year-on-year. The NIA said that visitors applied for their entry documents at the end of last year, and that the documents are valid for three months.

Some people have been speculating as to whether Taiwan’s next administration will have an effect on the number of Chinese arrivals. The NIA says that more time is needed to observe the impact.
