The health ministry is calling on the public to be on the lookout for symptoms of the Zika virus.
On Wednesday, deputy head of the Centers for Disease Control, Chou Chih-hao, called on members of the public to check with doctors if they develop a fever or rash-like symptoms.
“If pregnant women have Zika-like symptoms within two weeks of returning to Taiwan [from overseas], we suggest they check into an obstetrics and gynecology department for initial check-ups. The virus samples will be gathered here at the centers for disease control, and we will examine them as well," said Chou.
The ongoing epidemic of the Zika Virus originated in Brazil. The virus is transmitted by mosquito bites and sexual intercourse. It causes damage to the central nervous system and also has a suspected link to birth defects. The World Health Organization has declared the spread of the virus an international public health emergency.
Officials have called on health departments around Taiwan to work together on dealing with potential infections.
