Tang Prize CEO: Tang Prize connects Taiwan with world

CEO of the Tang Prize Foundation, Chern Jenn-chuan, says that the foundation has begun cooperation with internationally renowned academic groups to educate people on the prize. Chern was speaking at an RTI interview on Wednesday.

The Tang Prize is a set of biennial international awards set up by Taiwan’s top research body, Academia Sinica. The prize was established by Taiwanese entrepreneur Samuel Yin in 2012. Awards are given in the fields of sustainable development, biopharmaceutical science, sinology and rule of law.

Chern said the Tang Prize is different from the Nobel Prize, though the two prizes do complement each other in some ways. He said that the Tang Prize hopes to provide ways to make changes to the world as it faces new challenges in the 21st century.

Chern said that each Tang Prize winner receives NT$50 million in prize money, of which NT$10 million is to be allocated for research in the winner’s field. Chern said that each winner uses the money to do three to five years of research work, connecting Taiwan with the international community.
