Some 50,000 households in Tainan were still without water on Wednesday after a major earthquake on Saturday damaged the city’s network of water pipes.
The economics ministry, which oversees the nation's water supply, said Wednesday that the network suffered damage in 243 places. The ministry said that 26 of the damaged sections of pipeline were longer than 300mm in length.
Officials say that workers are trying to restore water to all but 5,000 of the affected households by Thursday night, but with limited water pressure.
On Wednesday morning, Premier Chang San-cheng inspected emergency repair work on Tainan's damaged water supply system. He called on workers to speed up repairs, and urged residents to help conserve water.
