President Ma Ying-jeou visited Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Center on Sunday afternoon. He was there to hear reports from various government agencies on the latest post-quake developments.
Rescue work has already concluded on the Weiguan Jinlong building in Tainan, which collapsed in a 6.4 magnitude earthquake last weekend. At least 114 are confirmed dead in that building alone. Two others died elsewhere as a result of the quake.
After Sunday’s meeting, President Ma expressed the nation’s solidarity with the people of Tainan, which bore the brunt of the quake. He said, “We are all Tainanren” (or people of Tainan).
The president said that when it came to Taiwan’s disaster prevention efforts, there was much room for improvement. He said he had called on the Cabinet to propose plans to make buildings more earthquake resistant.
President Ma offered thanks on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan for all those who worked round the clock following the earthquake. He also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
