Economics Minister John Deng says that one more week is needed before flat panel display factories in southern Taiwan can resume production. Production stopped as a result of the earthquake that rocked southern Taiwan on February 6.
Deng said that while most high-tech factories are equipped with anti-earthquake measures, many were nevertheless affected this time due to the earthquake’s high magnitude.
“Flat panel display factories use larger equipment, so it will take some time, maybe a week or so, before they can go back on line," said Deng.
Deng says that the high tech industry is not the only industry affected by the earthquake. There have reports of damage to operators within the traditional industries as well. Deng says that the economics ministry has called on local R & D centers to send teams to help those businesses resume production.
Meanwhile, there were still 1,500 households having trouble getting water on Monday due to inadequate water pressure. Deng says the Taiwan Water Corporation is working double time to fix the problem.
