Foreign Minister David Lin says the government is not going to make any “extra pledge” to its allies if President Ma Ying-jeou visits Central America.
Lin was speaking Friday at the legislature.
Unlike his predecessors, Ma has adopted a policy of what he calls “viable diplomacy”, which rejects the checkbook diplomacy of previous administrations.
Ma is rumored to be planning a tour of Central America, where six of Taiwan’s 22 diplomatic allies are located. The trip is said to be planned for late March, around two months before Ma steps down as president. Lin said that the Central American Parliament, Guatemala, and Belize have all extended an invitation to the president.
Lin said that the invitations are still under evaluation. Lin also said that existing projects between Taiwan and its allies will continue as scheduled.
