President-elect Tsai Ing-wen visited the Yung-an Tianwen Temple in the southern city of Kaohsiung on Sunday morning. She was there, along with Mayor Chen Chu, for the launch of a cultural festival.
In a speech during the opening ceremony, Tsai spoke about how recent natural disasters in Taiwan have served as a reminder of the impermanence of life, and the need for protection from the gods.
Tsai said that when she takes office on May 20, Taiwan will have a new government. She said she hopes her administration can work closely with the people of Taiwan to take better care of society and to improve the economy. Tsai also said she hoped the government could give the people of Taiwan a greater feeling of security.
Later, Tsai presided over the opening of an exhibit of artifacts from the temple’s collection. She also held up a large work by a renowned calligraphy master, which featured the Chinese characters for “peace”.
