No change to Taiwan’s stance on nuclear weapons: MOD
Ministry of National Defense

Taiwan’s defense ministry says there has been no change to its pledge to not develop nuclear weapons. The statement on Sunday came by way of a press release, following the United States’ declassification of documents about Taiwan’s work on nuclear technology in the late 1970s.

A current affairs magazine called The Diplomat posted an article on its website on Saturday, giving details of the declassified documents. The report said the United States on at least two occasions in the late 1970s sought to prevent Taiwan from acquiring advanced nuclear technology, which could potentially lead to a Taiwanese nuclear weapon.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said Sunday that the military is abiding by international conventions and national policy, and that it will not produce, develop, acquire, store, or use nuclear weapons. The ministry said that its position on that issue would not change.
