President-elect Tsai Ing-wen said on Tuesday that there needs to be a mechanism for dealing with controversial issues such as historical facts and transitional justice.
Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has brought up the issue of abolishing portraits of the founder of the Republic of China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen in public buildings. The Republic of China is the official name of Taiwan. However the DPP believes that Sun’s title as founder at the time was due to one party rule under the Kuomintang. Tsai said that eventually a mechanism must be set up to deal with issues that have to do with the history of Taiwan.
Tsai said, “The purpose of transitional justice is to clarify historical facts. It must allow the opportunity for people to discuss, so that society will not be split on believing what really happened in the past. We hope that after we deal with these issues of transitional justice that the nation will be united and move forward. We will set up a mechanism for totally dealing with matters having to do with transitional justice.”
