Taiwan rejects arbitration on South China Sea: Foreign ministry

The foreign ministry says that Taiwan will not accept the International Court of Arbitration’s ruling on the South China Sea dispute.

The Philippines brought a case against China over the dispute in 2015. The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration is expected to rule on the case within a year. Though Taiwan claims much of the area and controls the disputed Taiping Island, it has not been consulted by the Philippines or the court during the proceedings.

An official said Wednesday that Taiwan has decided to focus on international media exposure as a way of shedding light on its stance. Taiwan holds that Taiping Island is not a rock, as claimed by the Philippines, but an island, which Taiwan has controlled for over 60 years. The government also says that Taiwan has sovereignty over the waters around Taiping Island in accordance with international law.

Officials say that Taiwan is working hard to keep the issue alive and to make its stance heard in the international community.
