The National Nuclear Abolition Action Platform (NNAAP), a national anti-nuclear alliance, announced on Thursday that it plans to host an anti-nuclear protest march on March 12.
The NNAAP is asking the government to make Taiwan nuclear-free by 2025. It also demands the decommissioning of the country’s three functioning nuclear plants and to scrap construction on the fourth nuclear plant, which has been stalled since April 2014.
This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. The alliance says it hopes that the disaster will raise public awareness of the dangers of nuclear power and the pressing problem of nuclear waste management.
The activists will also be protesting the problem of environmental injustice in nuclear waste siting policies. They will demand the establishment of a mechanism that will allow the public to participate in policy-making on nuclear waste dumping.
The march will start at 2 pm in front of the Presidential Office Building and end at the Legislature building complex about 4:30 pm.
