The foreign ministry has reiterated Taiwan’s sovereignty over the Diaoyutai Islands.
The Diaoyutai Islands lie in the East China Sea. They are under de facto Japanese administration but are claimed by Taiwan.
The ministry issued a new statement about the islands on Thursday. The statement comes after Japanese media reported that Tokyo plans to deploy troops to the islands.
The foreign ministry says that the islands belong to Taiwan, whether viewed through the perspective of international law, history, geography, geology, and actual usage.
The statement says that Taiwan’s sovereignty over policy towards the islands is not negotiable. However, it also says that Taiwan’s policy is one of setting aside differences and working together with Japan to develop the islands in a peaceful and mutually beneficial way.
