Premier Chang San-cheng says that he views the Chinese Foreign Minister’s vision for cross-strait relations in a positive light.
On Thursday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi gave a speech at Washington think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies on. Wang said he hopes to see cross-strait relations develop peacefully under the administration of President-elect Tsai Ing-wen. He said he hopes that Tsai will pursue cross-strait relations in accordance with Taiwan’s constitution.
At a press conference on Friday, the Premier was asked about Wang’s statement. He said that he looks on the statement as a positive development.
Chang also said Taiwan’s government is paying close attention to recent rumors circulating as the number of mainland tourists visiting Taiwan drops. He said he hopes that Taiwan and China can keep an open line of communication.
“We hope that [the drop in the number of mainland tourists coming to Taiwan] will not be an issue," said Chang.
"As for its actual significance, the Mainland knows better than we do. But, through the Mainland Affairs Council, we will express to China our hope that the issue will hinder cross-strait tourism.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says that President-elect Tsai Ing-wen has made it clear that the cross-strait peace she will pursue is in the best interests of the people. The DPP also says Tsai will follow public opinion and act based on the constitutional system.
