Taipei Mayor takes on one-day north-south cycling challenge
520 km bike ride

Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je is taking on a 520 km cycling challenge. Ko is cycling from the northernmost tip of Taiwan to the island's southernmost tip. He began his journey 5:30 am on Saturday.

Ko set out on the journey from the Fugueijiao lighthouse in northern Taiwan's New Taipei City despite drizzling rain. He hopes to reach the Eluanbi lighthouse in Taiwan's southernmost county within 24 hours.

Ko says that completing this route has been one of his dreams. He says he is confident he can complete the ride.

Ko's bicycle journey is taking place as Taipei becomes the first city in Asia to host international cycling conference Velo-city Global. The four-day international cycling summit opened on Saturday in Taipei, with events showcasing Taipei and Taiwan's cycling culture.

Before this challenge, Ko had completed a journey from Taipei to Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan during January. It took him 19 hours to finish the 380-km ride.
