Media reports are saying that New Taipei City may be a site for nuclear waste storage, but New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu says he will not allow it.
Taiwan’s first nuclear power plant in Jinshan is scheduled to stop operations on December 5, 2018. Some media reports have been saying that after the power plant is decommissioned, it may be used as a nuclear waste storage site for 40 years.
Premier Chang San-cheng said there is no definite plan yet. Chang said, "We don’t have any comprehensive solution on hand right now. Taipower is currently making plans and planning to talk with local residents."
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Huang Guo-shu said this issue has not been negotiated between the government and local residents. He said the current administration should stop working on the case and leave it for the next administration to decide. Premier Chang said the case has already been sent to the New Taipei City government.
Economics minister John Deng said that there have always been plans for mid-term storage of nuclear waste and relevant environmental assessments are still being undertaken. But New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu reiterated that he will not allow nuclear waste to be stored in New Taipei City.
