The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has decided that President-elect Tsai Ing-wen should continue on as party chairperson after her inauguration.
Tsai has agreed to the proposal after much consideration. DPP spokesman Ruan Jhao-syong explained the reason for the decision:
"Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen said that she took a long time to think about this," said Ruan. "She believes that it will be necessary to continue on as chairperson to help promote reforms and policies. She has agreed to take on the position of party chairperson [while also serving as president]."
The current DPP charter says that a DPP president should also serve as party chairperson.
The party also says it has decided to cancel stipulations which grant the vice president, Presidential Office secretary-general, premier and other top government officials automatic places in the DPP central standing committee.
