Taiwan has signed a mutual driver's license recognition agreement with the US state of Massachusetts.
The agreement, signed Wednesday, allows licensed drivers from one side to receive a license issued by the other side without having to take a test. Massachusetts is the 16th US state to conclude such an agreement with Taiwan.
The agreement went through after three years of consultations. Effective Wednesday, licensed Taiwanese drivers with legal residence in Massachusetts are allowed to get a local driver's license without taking a written or road test. They only have to present their Taiwanese license and other documentation to the Massachusetts authorities.
The agreement is expected to benefit Taiwanese workers, as well as scholars involved in academic exchange programs with the US state. 1,500 Taiwanese students are currently living and studying there.
Holders of Massachusetts licenses who have resided legally in Taiwan for more than one year will be eligible to exchange their licenses for Taiwanese licenses.
