More than 170 museums and cultural centers in Taiwan joined thousands of other museums world-wide in marking International Museum Day on Sunday, May 18th. This is the 36th year in a row that museums around the world have joined together to promote the benefits and importance of these institutions.
Some of Taiwan’s top museums – 115 in total – participated in the event, including National Taiwan Museum, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and the Yingge Ceramics Museum. The National Palace Museum – which has one of the world’s largest collections of Chinese antiquities – was offering free admission to Taiwanese residents.
This year's International Museum Day themed "Museum Collections Make Connections" is a reminder of the fact that museums help foster bonds between visitors, generations, and world cultures.
Several museums in Taiwan arranged special events to mark the day. One institution -- the National Museum of History -- held outdoor musical performances and a fair to exhibit and sell Taiwanese museum publications as other souvenirs.
