The United Nations Gender Inequality Index puts Taiwan’s efforts at gender equality in fifth place in the world and first in Asia. That’s the word from President Ma Ying-jeou at a special event put on by the health ministry on International Women’s Day on Tuesday.
Ma said women’s presence in various fields of work has been growing. He said women’s work environment continues to improve and that the government has already passed the enforcement act on the UN’s Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
Ma said there is more and more gender equality in Taiwan, including a future female president.
Ma said, “There is more and more gender equality in this society. Not only is our president female, 38% of the members in the legislature are female. The United States does not even have half of our number. They think it’s unbelievable. 40% of the members in the Control Yuan and the Examination Yuan are women. We hope that this continues into the future.”
