DPP to phase out nuclear energy by 2025: Spokesperson
DPP spokesperson Ruan Jhao-syong

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Ruan Jhao-syong says that the DPP will phase out nuclear power in Taiwan by 2025.

Ruan was speaking on Friday, the fifth anniversary of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. He said the DPP has four main policy proposals that will see Taiwan’s operational nuclear plants gradually mothballed. He said the DPP will implement new policies to promote green energy.

Ruan said that Japan’s experience with nuclear disaster led many countries, including Taiwan, to reflect on their own energy mixes. He said that Germany, South Korea and Japan accelerated plans to shut down nuclear reactors as a result. He said that because Taiwan’s current administration has no way of handling a nuclear disaster, it is critical for Taiwan to move away from nuclear power.
