The current push to lower the voting age in Taiwan would require a change to the nation’s constitution. That was the word from Interior Minister Chen Wei-jen on Monday.
Chen told lawmakers that lowering the voting age from 20 to 18, as suggested by some lawmakers, would allow the younger generation to participate in politics earlier. He said the intention is good and that at an interior ministry meeting back in 2011, most of the participants were in favor of revising the constitution to make that possible.
The vice chairman of the Central Election Commission, Liu I-chou, echoed the interior minister’s comments. He told lawmakers on Monday that he is looking forward to the change.
