Vietnam must apologize and hold perpetrators accountable: Taiwan official
Taiwan’s representative to Vietnam, Huang Chih-peng

Taiwan’s representative to Vietnam, Huang Chih-peng, has demanded that Hanoi issue an apology and hold the people involved in the recent violent protests accountable.

In an interview with Taiwan’s Central News Agency on Monday, Huang said the anti-China protests which broke out in southern Vietnam last Tuesday seriously damaged property owned by Taiwanese businesses.

Huang said that while it is important that Vietnam’s representative to Taiwan has apologized to Taiwan’s government and businesspeople, it is not sufficient. Huang said the apology must come from a Cabinet-level Vietnamese official.

Huang said the level of damage to Taiwan-owned factories varies from place to place and that it’s difficult to assess the actual damage. He demanded that Hanoi hold the perpetrators accountable, offer compensation for losses, retrieve stolen goods, and charge the perpetrators with theft.

Huang said the Vietnamese government must help Taiwanese businesspeople rebuild their damaged factories and facilities.
