President-elect of the Democratic Progressive Party, Tsai Ing-wen announced on Tuesday the appointment of former Finance Minister Lin Chuan as Taiwan’s next premier.
Tsai said as of 2008, Lin has been assisting her in policy making and her election campaign. Tsai said Lin is not only well versed in finance, he is adept at communication. Tsai believes that Lin can form a Cabinet that will carry out reforms.
Tsai said, “I guarantee that Lin Chuan’s Cabinet will not just be one strong in finance but more so a Cabinet focused on reforms. It will be a team with the ability to execute and communicate. Our future administration will not only promote economic recovery, but more important, a mission to complete social reforms.”
Meanwhile, Lin had expressed his reluctance to take office to Tsai. But seeing the challenges that Taiwan faces, he said that he felt he should do his best and not let the Taiwanese people down.
Lin said that a critical point is a turning point. Since the Democratic Progressive Party has taken up more than half of the seats in the Legislature, it is an opportunity for the Cabinet to make real changes. Lin plans to complete the appointment of important positions in the Cabinet by April.
