Taiwan will do well if incoming gov’t does well: Vice President
Vice President Wu

Vice President Wu Den-yih says he believes that Taiwan will do well as long as the incoming government does well. Wu was speaking Wednesday to a visiting group of US experts on East Asian security.

Wu is a senior member of the ruling KMT, which lost January’s general elections. Along with President Ma Ying-jeou, he is set to leave office on May 20.

Wu said that Taiwan has had three transfers of power between political parties. He said that changes in political power are a common occurrence in countries that love democracy and freedom. Wu said that these changes in ruling party are like passes of a baton in a relay race.

Wu also told the group of visiting scholars that he believes maintaining cross-strait peace and stability is in the interests of Taiwan, the US, and the leadership of Mainland China. He said he hopes that the two sides can maintain cross-strait peace and stability regardless of changes of power on either side.
