Foreign Ministry thanks US for support of Interpol observer bid

The Foreign Ministry has thanked the US for supporting Taiwan’s bid to gain observer status in Interpol. Interpol is the world’s largest police organization.

The US House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill supporting Taiwan’s participation in Interpol on Monday. The US Senate had passed the bill on March 8. The bill is now awaiting the signature of President Barack Obama.

President Ma Ying-jeou said Wednesday that Taiwan has long worked together with China and other Asian countries to fight crime. He said that joining Interpol would greatly increase the effectiveness of Taiwan’s cooperative efforts.
