Taiwan’s ties with allies Nicaragua and Guatemala will remain unchanged. That’s according to the Nicaraguan and Guatemalan ambassadors to Taiwan.
The two diplomats were speaking Friday, a day after China reestablished formal diplomatic ties with the Gambia.
Nicaraguan ambassador William Manuel Tapia Aleman said his country’s relations with Taiwan are “very good,” adding that formal diplomatic ties will continue.
Meanwhile, Guatemalan ambassador Olga Maria Aguja Zuniga also said relations between Taiwan and Guatemala remain strong.
“No, no, no, no, no. My country has very good relations with Taiwan. No. No change. President Ma visited Belize and our country, Guatemala, this week. We have very strong, good relations," said Zuniga.
Also on Friday, Vice Foreign Minister Leo Lee said an evaluation conducted by the foreign ministry shows that Taiwan’s relations with its 22 allies are stable. Lee said it’s unlikely that China’s restoration of ties with the Gambia will lead to other allies switching recognition to Beijing.
