President-elect Tsai Ing-wen says her administration will play an active role in working with the private sector to build a low-carbon economy. Tsai was speaking Friday while visiting the Yulon Group, Taiwan’s leading carmaker.
Tsai said Taiwan must have its own auto industry, as the development of the auto industry is a gauge of a country’s production capabilities. Tsai said that while smart electric vehicles are a long-term investment and the scale of the market for them is not yet clear, Taiwan must manufacture them to meet its carbon-cutting goals.
“We must push for a low-carbon, energy-saving economy and build a sustainable society," said Tsai.
"It’s a path that Taiwan must take. When it comes to areas such as the revision of laws, infrastructure investment, and product promotions, the new government will play an even more active role in moving firmly forward together with the industrial sector.”
Yulon Group CEO Kenneth Yen said the world is optimistic about the business opportunities smart electric vehicles present. He said it is expected that the vehicles’ production value will explode by 2030.
