Taipei’s Department of Health is working on disease prevention measures for the 2017 Universiade (or university games) in Taipei.

The secretary-general of Taipei’s health department, Hsu Chao-cheng, spoke about the plans on Monday. He said the prevention measures will include disease inspection for athletes as they enter Taiwan and as they enter the athletes’ village.

“For example, [visitors from Africa] might bring in the Ebola or MERS viruses, whereas [those from] Southeast Asia and Central America might have the Zika virus," said Hsu. "These are what we are concerned about. We have, of course, made pamphlets for all the athletes from abroad so they can understand Taiwan’s disease prevention system when they enter.”

Taipei health officials say they have set up a network of hospitals to treat emergency cases and they have adequate medical supplies. They say they will work with eight other cities and counties in northern Taiwan and the Centers for Disease Control to monitor and control a potential outbreak.
