President-elect Tsai Ing-wen says she hopes that Mainland China will show a gesture of goodwill before she takes office on May 20. That’s according to a China Times interview published on Monday, with less than two months remaining before her inauguration.
In her interview with the Taiwan-based newspaper, Tsai answered questions on cross-strait relations, saying that Mainland China must recognize Taiwan as a democratic society and show more goodwill to the people of Taiwan. She said that in her decision making process she values public opinion most, and will have to maintain a delicate balance between that and China’s expectation.
Tsai said a sign of goodwill from China would help build the Taiwanese people’s trust and improve cross-strait relations.
Tsai also said that she would make sure her administration issues apologies to victims who suffered from political persecution in the past. She said she would also apologize on behalf of the government to indigenous peoples.
Tsai also pledged to allocate more resources to dealing with long-term care.
