Tsai invited to completion ceremony for Panama Canal expansion
DPP spokesperson Ruan Jhao-syong

Central American ally Panama has invited President-elect Tsai Ing-wen to attend a ceremony marking the completion of the Panama Canal expansion project.

Panamanian Ambassador Alfredo Martiz Fuentes delivered the letter of invitation to the headquarters of Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Thursday. The ceremony is expected to take place on June 26, just a month after Tsai takes office.

During the meeting, Tsai reportedly congratulated Panama on the completion of the canal extension project. She said that the project will improve the flow of global trade and raise Panama’s international importance.

Tsai has not yet made public her decision on whether to attend. However, DPP spokesperson Ruan Jhao-syong said that Panama is one of Taiwan’s important Central American allies. He also said that Tsai will give the event priority when arranging her post-inauguration schedule.
