Taiwan's former envoy to the United States, David Lee, is to become the foreign minister of Taiwan's next government. That’s according to a report in the Liberty Times, a major local newspaper, on Saturday.
David Lee is Taiwan's current representative to Australia. The Liberty Times quoted unidentified sources as saying that Lee has accepted the offer, and that Washington has been consulted on the appointment.
Current foreign minister David Lin said during an interview Saturday morning that he is not sure if the US has been consulted, but that he recognizes Lee as a diplomatic professional.
Lin said that Lee is the most senior diplomat in the ministry, having served as Director-General of the Government Information Office and deputy foreign minister, as well as Taiwan's representative to the EU, the US, and Canada. Lin said that Lee is a very suitable candidate for foreign minister.
