Low temperature warning issued for 17 cities and counties in Taiwan
Snow on Jade Mountain

The Central Weather Bureau has issued a low temperature warning for 17 cities and counties across Taiwan. The warning came Sunday, with a cold spell set to last through Monday morning.

The bureau says that areas north of the southern city of Tainan are likely to see overnight temperatures dipping into the single digits Celsius. Also affected are coastal areas of northeastern Yilan County and the outlying islands of Kinmen and Matsu, which are just off the coast of southern China.

The cold wave sent the mercury dipping to a low of minus 10.9 degrees C on Taiwan’s highest peak -- Yushan (Jade Mountain). The weather system also brought more snow to the mountain, which recorded about 19 centimeters as of 6am on Sunday morning.

The bureau says this could be the last chance for people to see snow in these mountain areas, with temperatures forecast to surge above 20 degrees throughout Taiwan during the day on Monday.
