Lawmakers from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have unveiled a new transitional justice draft bill. The goal of the bill is to reexamine the wrongdoings of the government from back when Taiwan was under totalitarian rule.
The DPP, which now has a majority in the legislature, is hoping that the draft bill can help promote societal harmony and reveal the truth about the decades-old violations of freedom and democracy.
The draft bill unveiled on Monday, calls for an independent Cabinet-level committee that would be tasked with promoting transitional justice. It would be made up of nine members appointed by the premier and approved by the legislature.
DPP caucus whip Ker Chien-ming said on Monday that the committee members would be divided into four groups. They would be responsible for political archives, past memories, truth and reconciliation, as well as ill-gotten political party assets.
It is expected that the DPP will submit its draft bill on April 1st at the earliest.
